Recently, for a part of the Georgian political beau monde, the actualization of the South Ossetian and Abkhazian theme is becoming not only a means to attract attention, but also the only topic for discussion with foreign colleagues, said the South Ossetian Foreign Minister Dmitry Medoev.
During the visit of the Georgian President Salome Zurabishvili to Vienna, Austrian President Alexander Van der Bellen stated at the joint press conference that he was supporting Georgia's sovereignty within its internationally recognized borders and expressed regret that the EUMM was unable to operate in South Ossetia. Such free interpretations of the facts, according to the Minister, cause extreme surprise in South Ossetia, "and the essence and tone of the Austrian president's statements are incomprehensible and fundamentally unacceptable."
"To recognize the borders of Georgia within the framework of the non-existent 30 years of the Georgian SSR is at least absurd. Although it can be assumed that for European politicians, and in particular for Mr. Van der Bellen, the Soviet Union is excising to this day, since they recognize the borders of its allied republic, I believe that President of Austria, who is supporting the sovereignty of Georgia, has the right to know that in 1990 the Supreme Soviet of Georgia unilaterally canceled all laws adopted by the Georgian Soviet Socialist Republic after 1921. Among them is the “Decree on the Formation of the South -Ossetian Autonomous Region as part of the Georgian SSR "dated April 22, 1922 - the only legal document on the basis of which South Ossetia was considered part of the Georgian SSR, which in turn was part of the USSR - a subject of international law and a member of the UN", - the Foreign Minister said in a comment published on the official website in connection with the statement of the President of Austria on the admission of the EU Observer Mission to the territory of the Republic..
The Foreign Minister has noted that the Republic of Austria is rightfully considered one of the authoritative centers of international legal science, "but let us kindly remind the President of this country that the formation and legal registration of the Republic of South Ossetia took place before the international recognition of the current Georgian state and before it was admitted to the UN".
“South Ossetia was determined as the independent and sovereign state as a result of two referendums in 1991 and 1992, therefore, it has nothing to do with the sovereignty and territorial integrity of еру present-day Georgia. according to the "Medvedev-Sarkozy Plan" adopted on August 12, 2008, their mandate allows monitoring only in the zone adjacent to South Ossetia, that is, in the buffer zone, but not in the territory of South Ossetia, "the Minister said.
He concluded, that it would not be superfluous to note that in South Ossetia, the activities of the European Union observers often cause extreme dissatisfaction, who, evading their direct duties of ensuring security and suppressing any provocations, turn a blind eye to violations by Georgia.
"Such actions can lead to a complication of the situation and the growth of new problems and dangerous security challenges in the region," Medoev said.
