The State Security Committee of South Ossetia continues to record the intensification of smuggling activities across the state border of South Ossetia with Georgia, the press service of the Committee reported.

"In particular, on December 15, 2021, in the vicinity of the settlement of Lopan, Znaur district of the Republic of South Ossetia, officers of the Border Service of the Committee, in cooperation with the servicemen of the Border Guard Service of the FSB of Russia, during an attempt to smuggle tobacco products into Georgia, detained two citizens of Georgia Megrelishvili Zaza Nodarovich, born in 1971 and Gogichashvili Tamaz Zaurovich, born in 1973, residents of the village of Avlevi, Kareli municipality.

It has been established that these smugglers arrived on the territory of the Republic illegally, "the press service said.

It was noted that on December 23, a criminal case had been initiated against the detainees on the grounds of crimes under Part 2 of Art. 200.2 (Smuggling of alcoholic beverages and (or) tobacco products) and Part 3 of Art. 322 (Illegal crossing of the State Border) of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation.

"On December 24, in relation to Megrelishvili ZN and Gogichashvili TZ, the Znaur District Court fixed a punishment in the form of detention for a period of two months," the Committee stressed.

The KGB once again draws the attention of citizens of the Republic that violations of the legislation of the Republic of South Ossetia related to the smuggling of alcoholic beverages and tobacco products entail not only administrative but also criminal liability.
