South Ossetia has welcomed the recognition of the sovereignty of the fraternal republics of Donbass, this is an important and responsible decision of the Russian leadership, said Foreign Minister Dmitry Medoev.

“We were all listening attentively to the meaningful speech of President Vladimir Putin immediately before the signing of the decrees, and also watched the broadcast of the meeting of the Security Council of the Russian Federation. The speeches of the leaders of the Federal Assembly, ministers and other responsible persons left no choice but to recommend that the president make a decision and immediately recognize the independence of the Donetsk and the Lugansk republics," the Minister said in a comment to the “Res" news agency.

According to him, the policy of the Western countries, the external rulers of Ukraine, "aggressively escalating the situation and arming the Kiev regime, has led to an incredible heat, creating a real threat to peace on the European continent."

"The interests of the state and the security of citizens are most important. I congratulate the peoples of the Donetsk and Luhansk republics on gaining independence. We will continue to maintain and develop interstate relations with the fraternal republics of Donbass," Medoev stressed.

It should be reminded that South Ossetia is the first country in the world to recognize the sovereignty of the DPR and the LPR in 2014.

Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a decree recognizing the independence of the Luhansk People's Republic and the Donetsk People's Republic the day before. The ceremony was broadcast from the Kremlin by the Rossiya-24 TV channel. The heads of the LPR and the DPR took part in the ceremony.

After signing the decrees, Vladimir Putin and the heads of the DPR Denis Pushilin and the LPR Leonid Pasechnik signed an agreement on friendship, cooperation and mutual assistance between the Russian Federation and the Donetsk People's Republic.

The televised address of Russian President Vladimir Putin to the citizens of the country, dedicated to the situation around Ukraine, lasted 55 minutes. The head of the Russian state explained the historical and modern processes taking place around the neighboring country, and also said that NATO's actions left Russia no other opportunity to ensure its own security, except to recognize the independence of the Donetsk and the Lugansk People's Republics.
