Negotiations within the framework of the Geneva discussions

On Thursday, the first meeting of the South Ossetian delegation this year with the co-chairs of the Geneva discussions on security in Transcaucasus is taking place in the capital of South Ossetia.

The international delegation has included the OSCE Co-Chair Viorel Moshanu, the EU Co-Chair Toivo Klaar, the UN Co-Chair Cihan Sultanoglu, the EU staff member Bjorn Kuehne, the OSCE staff member Siegfried Weber, the UN staff member Christoph Bierwirth and others.

As noted by the head of the South Ossetian delegation Konstantin Kochiev, "today's meeting is the first in the current year, since the meetings planned earlier were canceled, including the 56th round of the Geneva discussions."

"Along with this, a number of unresolved problems are accumulating. Nevertheless, the Geneva discussions have no analogues, their role in the construction of security can hardly be overestimated. The very fact of the existence of this format allows maintaining stability in the region," Kochiev has emphasized.

He commended the work of the Incident Prevention and Response Mechanisms (IPRM), which continued to operate.

"Strengthening security is the main objective of the Geneva discussions," he said.

Klaar has also expressed regret that previously scheduled meetings were cancelled.

"We are organizing meetings with all participants of the format, and we would like to exchange views with all of them on how to advance the discussions. The Geneva format is moving forward, and we are removing all the negative circumstances," he said.

The co-chairs have noted that they are doing everything possible to ensure that the next round in Geneva takes place.
