The Republic of South Ossetia, as the independent state, took place in 1992, when the Act of State Independence was adopted on May 29, 1992, said Akhsar Dzhioev, Foreign Minister of the Republic, at the briefing in Tskhinval.

“Naturally, until 2008 we were a partially recognized state. As for the recognition by Russia (August 26, 2008), this is a significant, fateful event for all our people. Speaking about this date, we cannot but mention the events that took place before that - those tragic events, about the difficult period that fell on the people of South Ossetia," said Dzhioev.

He stressed that "speaking of the statehood of South Ossetia, it should be noted that the very principle of sovereignty presupposes the presence of the necessary attributes of statehood, such as territory, authorities, army, population."

“Our republic meets all these criteria, and we can say with full confidence that we are an established state. We have been recognized by Russia - one of the world leaders, a nuclear power, and the recognition by Russia gives us more opportunities to develop, build our peaceful life, the future of our children, and progressively develop relations with other countries. Does this comply with international law? I think yes. International law does not say how many countries must recognize a state in order for it to comply with some norms,” Akhsar Dzhioev said.

The Foreign Minister has added that "the Republic is not yet participating in any international organizations, in particular, the UN, but is looking forward with optimism and will be systematically moving forward to implement its plans."

Russia recognized the independence of South Ossetia and Abkhazia on August 26, 2008. This happened shortly after Georgia's armed attack on South Ossetia on the night of 8 August. Then Russia came to the defense of its citizens and peacekeepers who had been working in the Republic since 1992. As a result of the five-day armed attack, more than a thousand people were killed, including 72 Russian servicemen.
