August 26 is the day of recognition of the state independence of the Republic of South Ossetia by the Russian Federation, this landmark event in the modern history of the Republic, which took place fourteen years ago, was the logical result of the long-term forced struggle of the people of South Ossetia against permanent aggression from Georgia, the victims of which were thousands of defenders of South Ossetia and of its civilians, more than a hundred thousand Ossetians became refugees, according to the official press release of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of South Ossetia, spread on Friday.
"The almost complete economic, political and information blockade of South Ossetia by Georgia, which has continued since the early 90s of the last century, has led to a catastrophic degradation of the infrastructure necessary for life. The apotheosis of Georgia's criminal policy towards the Republic of South Ossetia was a full-scale military aggression against South Ossetia on the night of August 7-8, 2008, carried out as a result of the connivance of the Georgian military aspirations by the international community and the demonstrative violation by Georgia of its obligations that had international guarantees," the text says.
The Foreign Ministry has noted that the Russian Federation, based on the fundamental norms of international law and in full accordance with the logic of events, intervened in a situation that threatened catastrophic consequences for the people of South Ossetia and the destruction of the structure of security and stability that had developed in the South Caucasus region.
"After the successful implementation of the operation to force the aggressor to peace, which reaffirmed Russia's status as a great power, the leadership of the Russian Federation took the only true and fateful decision for our two states and peoples to recognize the independence of the Republic of South Ossetia. For fourteen years, the Republic of South Ossetia has been living a peaceful life, using this historic opportunity to strengthen and develop their sovereign statehood, in cooperation, interaction and with very significant friendly assistance from the Russian Federation, its main ally and strategic partner," the document says.
The Foreign Ministry has emphasized that the further development and deepening of South Ossetian-Russian relations is becoming even more urgent against the backdrop of the growing scale of Georgia's military-technical cooperation with the countries of the NATO bloc and its desire to join it, the European justice completely ignoring the need to bring Georgia to justice for committed war crimes , the lack of a political assessment by the international community in connection with Georgia's refusal to assume obligations on the non-use of force against neighboring states and, finally, the continuation of the idea of annexing the territory of the Republic of South Ossetia and ending its existence as a subject of international law on the Georgian political agenda .
"Despite the fact that Georgia to this day remains unstable internally and hostile to the Republic of South Ossetia, which cannot but cause the most serious concern, the new geopolitical reality created by the Russian Federation excludes the possibility of military revenge for Georgia and fully meets the interests of the Republic of South Ossetia. Ossetia and the Russian Federation in strengthening the friendly alliance, which has the deepest historical roots and is based on mutual support and the closest interaction in the current difficult conditions," the statement says.
