The leadership and people of the Republic of South Ossetia are fully supporting holding the referenda on September 23-27, 2022 on the issue of joining the Russian Federation in the Luhansk and Donetsk People's Republics, Zaporozhye and Kherson regions, the head of the South Ossetian state Alan Gagloev said on Monday.
“We are also strongly supporting the special military operation being carried out in the region.
These are the only correct steps in the current international political situation aimed at stopping mass bloodshed, long-term discrimination and human rights violations in the region, and preventing the deployment of the NATO military infrastructure near the immediate borders of the Russian Federation. Achieving peace in the region is the most difficult task, but I am sure that it will be achieved,” the President said.
According to him, Republic of South Ossetia has also passed a long, hard and heroic path towards freedom and independence from aggressive, nationalist Georgia.
“Today, thanks to the assistance of the Russian Federation, people of South Ossetia feel safe and are building their peaceful future. The Republic is firmly and steadily moving along the path of integration with Russia. We consider joining the Russian Federation as the final result of integration. But this step cannot be taken by us unilaterally. In accordance with the accepted international obligations, we are pursuing a foreign policy agreed with the Russian party,” the head of state has noted.
He has reminded that during the consultations in Moscow in June this year, it was established that the issue of holding a referendum on the accession of the Republic of South Ossetia to the Russian Federation was not agreed with the Russian party and turned out to be untimely for it.
“Based on the results of the meeting, we will have to conduct a broad public discussion of options for further integration with the Russian Federation, come to a common opinion the referendum issue, and then hold further consultations with the Russian party.
There is no other way to solve this fateful question for us. This is well known to all political forces in the Republic, but some of them are trying to speculate on the topic of holding the referendum.
I consider it unacceptable to earn political points on the exploitation of the theme of reunification with Russia, for the sake of which the lives of our best representatives were given. Moreover, uncoordinated actions and statements on such a serious foreign policy issue entail misunderstanding on the part of our strategic partner. We have a common security outline and it is our duty to take measures to preserve it.
Therefore, we will continue our preparatory work in close cooperation with the Russian side consistently, based on the interests of the Republic of South Ossetia and the Russian Federation,” Alan Gagloev said in the statement.
