The Russian Federation currently views South Ossetia as the independent state. This was stated by the head of the Republic's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Akhsar Dzhioev, at the final press conference held at the Information and Press Committee, responding to the journalists' questions about the possibility of South Ossetia joining Russia.

"I would urge realism here; this is a bilateral process," Dzhioev has emphasized.

The Minister has noted that Russia's position on this issue has been repeatedly reaffirmed.

"Currently—and the Russian party has repeatedly confirmed this—Russia views South Ossetia as the independent state. Therefore, we proceed from the current realities," the Foreign Minister stated.

Dzhioev has added that contacts with Russian colleagues are ongoing, and if a mutual understanding is reached on this issue, appropriate decisions may be made in the future.
