For the first time in the history of the Republic, South Ossetia received students from the Syrian Arab Republic, said rector of the South Ossetian State University Vadim Tedeev.
“Since January of this year, two young people from Syria entered the faculty of Russian philology, one on the basis of higher education and the other on the basis of secondary education. In the history of South Ossetia, this happens for the first time,” said Tedeev.
According to the rector, the Syrians will study by correspondence, they will come to the session for a month twice a year - in spring and autumn.
“As a rule, we do not provide housing for external students, but taking into account the situation, we will make an exception. I think that the leadership of the Republic will not leave this issue without attention and housing will be provided for them during the session,” he explained.
As noted by Tedeev, at the first stage, the university will be able to accept at least 10 students from Syria, since this is a new direction for the university, but this figure may increase in the future.
The South Ossetian State University is also preparing for the signing in the near future inter-university cooperation agreements with universities in Syria - the University of Damascus and the University of Aleppo.
Syria recognized the independence of South Ossetia and Abkhazia on May 29, 2018. On July 23, 2018 President of South Ossetia, Anatoly Bibilov, paid an official visit to Syria. Earlier it has been reported that a visit of the official Syrian delegation to South Ossetia will take place in April.
