Republic of South Ossetia appealed to the Italian authorities for recognition, said the head of the Foreign Office of the Caucasian Republic in Italy, Mauro Murgia.
"We believe that the time has come for Italy, through its current government, to recognize the Republic of South Ossetia as an autonomous state on an equal basis with all the states represented in the UN," said Murgia, to RIA Novosti.
According to him, South Ossetia is calling on all European nations "to shake off stereotypes and bonds, imposed from outside Europe."
Murgia writes that recognition of South Ossetia will mean "renewing the tradition of peaceful coexistence and uniting for the sake of self-determination and the rights of peoples to determine their own future."
August 26, 2008 Moscow recognized the sovereignty of Abkhazia and South Ossetia. The leaders of Russia have repeatedly stated that the recognition of independence of South Ossetia and Abkhazia reflects the existing realities and is not subject to revision.
