South Ossetia will always be grateful to Russia and its leaders for their help in August 2008 and subsequent support, said President of the Republic Anatoly Bibilov.

“We will never tire of thanking the Russian Federation for saving the people of South Ossetia. For doing everything today to ensure the development of South Ossetia. It is doing everything for the world community to know the crimes that were committed against us. It is doing everything to make the recognition of South Ossetia irreversible, "said Anatoly Bibilov at a mourning event in Tskhinval.

He thanked the Russian President Vladimir Putin, Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev and "all those who directly made the decision to provide military assistance, and subsequently assistance in the development of our state."

On the night of August 8, 2008, Georgia fired at peaceful Tskhinval from Grad multiple rocket launchers. Moscow defended its citizens and on August 26, 2008 recognized the sovereignty of South Ossetia and Abkhazia.

Russian leaders have repeatedly stated that the recognition of the independence of the two republics reflects the existing realities and is not subject to revision.
