10 years ago (2009), Russia concluded an agreement on military cooperation with South Ossetia and Abkhazia, providing for the creation of Russian military bases in these republics.

The Agreement was signed by the Defense Minister of the Russian Federation Anatoly Serdyukov, as well as the heads of the military departments of South Ossetia and Abkhazia Yuri Tanaev and Merab Kishmaria.

The agreement was concluded for 49 years with automatic extension for the next five-year periods. In accordance with the Agreement, Russia is given the opportunity to build, use and improve the infrastructure of military bases on the territory of South Ossetia and Abkhazia, as well as the creation of a joint group of forces in both peacetime and wartime.

These are the first documents on cooperation between the defense departments of the three states.
