The Geneva discussions have no alternative as a negotiating platform that provides a direct dialogue between Tbilisi and Tskhinval, the head of the South Ossetian delegation at the Geneva discussions Konstantin Kochiev said at the meeting of the South Ossetian delegation with the OSCE, UN and the EU. co-chairs

The meeting was held on Thursday in the capital of South Ossetia.

“We have repeatedly expressed our high assessments of the significance of the Geneva discussions, their role in strengthening the existing security structure. The experience of the Geneva discussions shows that the parties involved are able to resolve contentious issues, regardless of polar positions on principled approaches. The very fact of the existence of this format over the past 14 years allows maintaining stability in the region,” Kochiev said.

He noted that progress in the development of a document on the non-use of force in the framework of the work of the Geneva discussions would be important for strengthening stability and security in the region.

Strengthening security is the main task of the Geneva discussions. The appeals of foreign authors addressed to Georgia to use the current moment to solve their strategic goals by force, as well as the active development of Georgia's military cooperation with foreign partners, which also increases security risks in the Caucasus region, do not go unnoticed. We believe that new challenges should stimulate active work and a positive agenda," Kochiev said.

The head of the South Ossetian delegation added that at the same time, Georgia's display of certain restraint and prudence over the past few months gives grounds for some optimism regarding the prospects for developing a constructive attitude of the participants to the work on the document on the non-use of force.

“We expect that there are no insurmountable obstacles for holding the 56th round of the Geneva discussions,” Konstantin Kochiev concluded.
