Assistance from volunteer formations played an important role in disrupting the plans of the Georgian troops to seize the territory of the Abkhaz state. This is stated in the congratulatory address of President Alan Gagloev to the head of Abkhazia Aslan Bzhaniya on the occasion of Volunteer Day.
31 years ago, Georgia, having previously failed in the implementation of its plans to destroy South Ossetia, unleashed a large-scale aggression against Abkhazia, hoping to eliminate the Abkhazian statehood.
Gagloev has noted that the aggressor intended to capture Abkhazia in a matter of days, did not calculate the strength of the spirit of the Abkhaz people and their unshakable will to fight for freedom and independence.
"A powerful volunteer movement in support of Abkhazia, unfolded throughout the entire North Caucasus, was an extremely unpleasant surprise for the Georgian nationalists," the congratulatory message published on the official website of the head of state says.
The President has also reminded that detachments of volunteers from South Ossetia also made a significant contribution to the defense of the fraternal republic.
“Hundreds of our compatriots took part in the just war of the Abkhaz people, bravely fighting on the hottest sectors of the front. Many of them gave their lives, having died in the struggle for the freedom of their Abkhaz brothers. Eternal memory to the heroes,” the telegram says.
Gagloev has stressed that the volunteer movement showed the strength of the traditions of mutual assistance of the fraternal peoples of the Caucasus, demonstrated their readiness to fight for common interests in the name of a better future for our countries.
“The war was not our choice, the peoples of Abkhazia and South Ossetia were faced with the need to defend their right to exist, the right to speak their native language and develop their national culture. And we coped with this fateful task. Thanks to the help of the Russian Federation and mutual support, our countries have achieved victory, achieved peace and today they are building their statehood, restoring the economy, creating conditions for the development and well-being of the Ossetian and Abkhaz peoples,” the leader of the Republic has noted.
He has added, that the joint struggle against the common enemy, further strengthened the fraternal Abkhaz-Ossetian relations, contributed to the formation of a full-fledged alliance and close friendly cooperation between South Ossetia and Abkhazia.
Gagloev expressed confidence that friendship between the states would continue to strengthen; the authorities would assist each other in the implementation of relevant projects for the sake of the prosperity of the Abkhaz and Ossetian peoples.
