Portraits of the Great Patriotic War veterans were carried on Thursday on the main square of the capital of South Ossetia.

Following the traditional Victory Parade, a mass procession took place in honor of Victory Day - the “Immortal Regiment”.

The procession was led by President of the Republic Alan Gagloev, Prime Minister Konstantin Dzhussoev and Russian Ambassador to South Ossetia Marat Kulakhmetov.

The head of state carried a portrait of his grandfather’s brother Mate Gagloev, who went missing during the Great Patriotic War.

In total, 23,736 people left South Ossetia for the front, 11.7 thousand died, over 7 thousand went missing. The title Hero of the Soviet Union was awarded to 36 Ossetians, eight of them were from South Ossetia.

Also in the ranks of the “Immortal Regiment” were carried portraits of the heroes perished during the special Russian military operation in Ukraine.

The columns of the regiment also carried portraits of the defenders of the Fatherland perished while repelling the Georgian aggression in the period from 1989 to 2008.

Representatives of various organizations, ministries and departments, as well as the public took part in the procession.
