The carefully planned military aggression of the criminal Saakashvili regime against South Ossetia canceled out many years of Russia's peacekeeping efforts and was a gross violation of Georgia's international obligations, President of the RSO Anatoly Bibilov said, speaking at a solemn meeting timed to the 12th anniversary of the recognition of the RSO by the RF.
“As a result of the Georgian aggression, on the very first day, hundreds of civilians and Russian peacekeepers were killed, and huge damage was caused to the infrastructure of Tskhinval. This was a continuation of the Georgian policy of genocide against the Ossetians. The actions of the Georgian military clique clearly fall under the definition of war crimes, which were massive and are crimes against humanity,” the President said.
According to him, the advance of the Georgian troops, designed to capture all strategic positions in a matter of hours, cut communications and seize Tskhinval, was stopped thanks to the courage and resilience of the defenders of the Fatherland and the Russian peacekeepers, who did not flinch and did not retreat before the many times superior in numbers, weapons and military opportunities to the enemy.
"The Georgian strategists' hopes for overwhelming superiority and a quick victory did not materialize," Anatoly Bibilov emphasized, adding that the courage and dedication of the defenders of Tskhinval allowed Russia to urgently transfer the necessary forces and implement decisive measures to force the aggressor to peace, stop the reprisal over the South Ossetia and unleashing a new war against Abkhazia.
