The South Ossetian party at the meeting with the co-chairs of the Geneva Discussions stated that the solution of security problems should begin with work to ensure the security of border areas - from the Tsnelis region, where at the end of August 2019 the Georgian side had illegally set up a police post on the territory of South Ossetia. This was announced by the Presidential Envoy for post-conflict settlement Murat Dzhioev at the briefing following the visit of foreign diplomats.
“This post has created a very dangerous situation along the entire perimeter of the border. The issue of removing the Georgian police post from the territory of South Ossetia was repeatedly raised on the platform of the Geneva discussions, as well as in the IPRM format. But the checkpoint is still standing, so the border of South Ossetia is closed even at those checkpoints that used to function,” the plenipotentiary explained.
Dzhioev has noted that at a meeting with the co-chairs, the South Ossetian delegation emphasized: in order to talk about a relaxation of the situation in the border regions, it is necessary to start with the Tsnelis region. He has reminded reporters that in December 2019, as part of the work on security issues, the co-chairs conveyed to all participants their proposals for creating a security territory in areas adjacent to the border.
“Having studied the proposals, we pointed out that this work should be started from the Tsnelis region. In continuation of this work, the delegation of the co-chairs submitted new proposals, we will study them and express our opinion at the next round of the Geneva discussions and at the IPRM meeting,” the Plenipotentiary explained.
