In May this year, South Ossetia received an invitation from the leadership of Syria for the participation of the South Ossetian delegation as observers in the presidential elections in the Syrian Arab Republic, Alan Tadtaev, head of the Republic’s legislative body, said at the press conference in Tskhinval.
According to him, the Parliament, together with the Presidential Executive Office, determined the participants of the delegation. “People of South Ossetia remember how in 2018 Syria recognized the independence of South Ossetia, thus making a responsible political step. We will develop cooperation in all possible ways and make efforts to bring the peoples of the two republics closer together. Therefore, the top leadership of our country made a decision to send a delegation as observers,” he said.
Tadtaev has added that in addition to South Ossetia, delegations from Russia, Iran, Iraq, a number of Arab countries, etc., took part in the elections in Syria as observers. “By the way, media representatives were represented even more widely, including from European countries. I can assure you that our group did not reveal any violations during the voting, we have done fruitful work,” the Chairman of the Parliament noted.
As for cooperation with representatives of other countries, as the Speaker has explained, they were working closely, for example, with the Russian delegation, and with other observers. “With our Russian colleagues, we were working out a joint work plan, coordinating all our actions. Thank them for their attention,” Tadtaev stressed.
The Chairman of the Parliament said that a commission for cooperation with the Parliament of South Ossetia had been created in the Syrian Arab Republic. “We will also create a similar commission in the near future. During the dialogue with the Speaker of the Syrian Parliament, the South Ossetian delegation discussed topical issues, the parties agreed on interaction between the legislative bodies of the two countries, many questions arose in terms of lawmaking, the rules of procedure for the parliaments. It was decided to work out all the issues within the framework of the commissions, and agreed to cooperate more closely through the parliaments. We will use these agreements,” Tadtaev stressed.
The head of the South Ossetian legislative body has reminded that last year the coronavirus pandemic made adjustments to the planned action plan, many issues that were raised during the visit of the South Ossetian delegation to Syria in 2018 have not yet been resolved. “Today we are confident that the pandemic will recede and our relations will reach a higher, qualitative level and the joint work of the parliaments of the two republics will soon bear fruit,” the Chairman of the South Ossetian Parliament assured.
