President of South Ossetia Anatoly Bibilov said that unification with Russia was the strategic goal of the Republic, it will be part of its historical homeland, and appropriate legal steps will be taken in the near future.
On August 26, 2008 Moscow recognized the sovereignty of Abkhazia and South Ossetia. The leaders of Russia have repeatedly stated that the recognition of the independence of the two former Georgian autonomies reflects the existing realities and is not subject to revision.
