The signing of the Treaty of Friendship, Cooperation and Mutual Assistance between the Republic of South Ossetia and the Russian Federation on September 17, 2008 created the conditions for expanding the South Ossetian-Russian political dialogue, increasing bilateral cooperation in trade, economic, scientific, technical, humanitarian and other fields, according to the press release of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of South Ossetia published on the official website of the Ministry.

“September 17 marks the 15th anniversary of the signing of the Treaty of Friendship, Cooperation and Mutual Assistance between the Republic of South Ossetia and the Russian Federation, which became the first comprehensive basic document that largely defined the principles and priorities of interstate relations between the two countries.

The provisions of the Treaty immediately received practical content and made it possible to bring interaction between the two states to a new high level,” the Foreign Ministry noted.

They have noted that the principles underlying the Treaty were further developed with the signing of the Treaty of Alliance and Integration between the Republic of South Ossetia and the Russian Federation on March 18, 2015.

“Today, there are more than 130 documents in force in almost all areas of relations, allowing for a close and constant dialogue on key areas of bilateral interaction.

We consider this significant date as the beginning of the legal formalization of the South Ossetian-Russian partnership, as the evidence of a mutual understanding of the importance of the principles of good neighborliness and mutual assistance, principles aimed at preserving the national interests of South Ossetia and Russia, for the sake of peace, security and stability in the Transcaucasia region,” emphasized the Ministry

The Foreign Ministry has added that the past period has convincingly demonstrated that the fundamental semantic meanings of the Treaty, aimed at further strengthening relations between South Ossetia and Russia, have not lost their relevance and continue to fully meet the interests of the two nations.

“South Ossetia and Russia, based on a solid legal framework, are consistently strengthening mutual strategic trust, increasing mutual support and promoting integration processes,” the Ministry noted.
