In the external sphere, the main threat to the national security of South Ossetia and the region as a whole remains the unsettled relations with Georgia and its reluctance to sign a legally binding document on the non-use of force, the statement of the South Ossetian Foreign Ministry on the results of the year reads.

The Ministry has noted that Tbilisi refuses to recognize the existing geopolitical realities.

“The result of this position is, among other things, numerous cases of detention of Georgian citizens who illegally found themselves on the territory of South Ossetia with demonstrative connivance on the part of the Georgian law enforcement officers,” the Foreign Ministry said. “Georgian representatives present these facts at all possible international platforms as so-called n. "illegal abductions", which, according to official Tbilisi, quite fit into the non-existent agenda of the so-called "occupation of part of the territory of Georgia" imposed on the international community.

In connection with this, the Ministry has repeatedly made relevant statements and given comments, which contain, among other things, a call on Tbilisi to begin joint work on the delimitation and demarcation of the state border, which involves, among other things, determining the procedure for crossing it according to civilized and transparent rules , the Foreign Ministry has reminded.

“The current leadership of Georgia is subject to very serious pressure, both from the internal radical opposition and from the outside, from the so-called “friends of Georgia” in connection with demands to join the anti-Russian coalition of countries, including the imposition of sanctions and even, under certain circumstances, opening of the “second front.” So far, the current Georgian leadership has managed to pursue a balanced policy and not succumb to such suicidal calls,” the Ministry has noted.

The Foreign Ministry has added that South Ossetia hopes that the Georgian political and military leadership will remain prudent and pragmatic and will not allow the implementation of imposed scenarios that could lead to catastrophic consequences.

“We continue to closely monitor the internal political situation in neighboring Georgia and assess possible risks and threats in close contact with our Russian and Abkhaz colleagues,” the Foreign Ministry noted.
