The incidents in the area of responsibility of the European Union Monitoring Mission (EUMM) in Georgia might hamper the normal work on identification and consolidation of the border line between South Ossetia and Georgia, reports the press-service of the Office of the South Ossetian President’s Special Representative for Post-Conflict Settlement referring to the letter addressed by the Special Representative Boris Chochiev to Pierre Morel, the EU Co-Chair of the Geneva Discussions on secuirty in South Caucasus.
Noting that the Georgian side rejected the proposal of South Ossetia to conduct joint activities on delimitation and demarcation of the state border, Chochiev informs Morel that due to this, the South Ossetian side has unilaterally started to implement measures on identifying and fortifying of the borderline between South Ossetia and Georgia.
"However, there are certain problems that hamper the normal implementation of the above works. Thus, on 25 November 2010, in the area of the village Dits, without having violated the the regime of the state border, our specialists have been conducting topographic surveys of the southern section of the state border of South Ossetia to install the main facilities. During these operations there was a misunderstanding with the Georgian side in the presence of EUMM monitors that could lead to serious incidents, " says the letter.
Based on the above, as well as the fact that these works will continue to go on along the perimeter of the state border of South Ossetia, in order to avoid any incidents Chochiev addresses Morel with a request to inform the EUMM observers and the Georgian population living in the border zone accordingly.
It is worth reminding that in accordance with the Medvedev-Sarkozy Agreement concluded in August 2008 EUMM operates on the territory of Georgia adjacent to the borderline with South Ossetia.
