Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Abkhazia called on the Georgian side to abandon the course towards provoking a conflict and to refrain from any steps that could lead to an escalation of tension in the region, the Foreign Ministry said.
The Foreign Ministry is closely monitoring the situation associated with the provocative actions of Georgia in the border areas of the Republic of South Ossetia.
“We are convinced that any cross-border disputes should be resolved during official negotiations and not go beyond the legal framework. We urge the international mediators - co-chairs of the Geneva International Discussions to express their position on the provocative actions of the Georgian side and have the necessary impact on the official Tbilisi. In case of continued provocative steps of the Georgian authorities aimed at further exacerbating the situation, all responsibility for the further development of events will completely fall on the Georgian side, "- the Foreign Ministry said.
The Republic of Abkhazia is ready to begin mutual consultations with the Republic of South Ossetia to coordinate actions in order to take effective measures to ensure peace and stability in the Caucasus region.
It should be reminded that Georgian police put up an illegal checkpoint on the territory of the Republic near the village of Uista (Tsnelis). The authorities of South Ossetia demanded from Georgia to remove the police post by Friday, but the requirement was not met. Negotiations are ongoing, an additional South Ossetian border post has been put up in the area of the village of Uista by the order of the head of state, border protection has been strengthened.
The next meeting of the IPRM contact group is scheduled for September 2.
