The KGB of South Ossetia records a difficult epidemiological situation in Georgia. This is stated in a statement issued on Friday by the Сommittee.

“So, despite the partial lifting of restrictions and the recent statement by the National Center for Disease Control that the epidemic is on the decline, the spread of the coronavirus COVID-19 pandemic continues. Currently, 671 cases of the disease have been detected in the country, 3873 people are in quarantine, 404 are in hospitals under the supervision of doctors, 12 have died,” the KGB states.

The Committee has noted that in the Bolnisi, Marneuli and Tetritskaro municipalities, "where large foci of infection were found and the situation began to get out of control, the population is deprived of basic medical supplies."

“The situation of residents of these municipalities has especially worsened after strict quarantine was introduced in these administrative regions. In the Tetritskaro municipality, where more than 20 thousand people live, there are only two infrastructurally faulty pharmacies and one hospital in which only outpatient medical care is available. In all quarantine zones, mass infection of doctors is recorded, and the healthcare sector as a whole is experiencing a severe staff shortage, which can be partially replenished exclusively at the expense of medical students,” the statement said.

The text indicates that some Georgian politicians believe that the government underestimates the objective data of infected COVID-19 and intentionally misrepresents information on the epidemiological situation.

“In addition, the Georgian leadership was not able to provide a concrete plan to get the country affected by the pandemic out of the economic crisis. The Georgian authorities offered people who lost their jobs, regardless of their salary, to pay 200 GEL per month for a family - this is about $ 2 per day per family, and for self-employed - 300 GEL for six months. The so-called “anti-crisis plan” has caused sharp criticism among the Georgian population. The latest opinion poll showed that residents of Georgia have a negative attitude towards the government, which has demonstrated its helplessness and unpreparedness in economic terms,” the intelligence service said.

Despite the existing problems in the epidemiological and socio-political spheres, Georgia is increasing information-psychological pressure on the Republic of South Ossetia.

In particular, the Georgian and foreign media publish materials that distort the real situation and misinform the international community about the situation in the Republic.

“At the same time, proposals for help received by South Ossetia from various international organizations are used by official Tbilisi as a cover for intentions to establish control over the territory of South Ossetia,” the authors of the text note.

The KGB states that against this background, using the state of emergency, the Tbilisi regime virtually neutralized the activities of independent media, NGOs and civil society activists, who monitored the situation along the line of the state border of South Ossetia with Georgia and ensured that objective information was received by all the interested parties.

“In particular, in February 2020, on the initiative of the leader of the NGO “Strength in Unity”, D. Katsarava, it was planned to equip all Georgian citizens living in the border area, with GPS devices that allow real-time monitoring of the location and movement routes of all potential violators of the state the borders of South Ossetia and Georgia, ” the KGB reminded.

This project, the statement said, if implemented, would greatly facilitate not only the life of the Georgian border population, but also the work of the South Ossetian border authorities in identifying and detaining violators of the state border, as well as reliably ensuring the security of the borders of the Republic, including in the region of the village of Whista (Tsnelis).
