The representative office of the International Committee of the Red Cross in South Ossetia has completed the first distribution of humanitarian aid this year in the form of food and hygiene products, the organization's public relations specialist Marina Tedety told the IA “Res”.
“Quarterly we provide food assistance to elderly people in need for three months. The food package is big enough. It includes cereals, pasta, canned food, vegetable oil, condensed milk, etc., i.e., the main products, the provision of which helps to save a part of the income of the beneficiary. In addition, we donate hygiene products, such as dishwashing detergents, shampoos, toothpastes, brushes, etc. to those in need. for three months,” Tedety said.
According to her, the Red Cross Mission in South Ossetia conducts such distributions four times a year. The recipients of assistance are exclusively elderly people with very low incomes.
“The condition for inclusion in the support program is a low income, not exceeding the local minimum pension, and this is about 3,700 rubles. In the first quarter, 239 people received the aid, 68 of whom live in Tskhinval, 50 in Znaur, 21 in Dzau, 39 in Leningor and 61 in Tskhinval districts of the Republic,” the PR specialist has added.
As noted by Tedety, the delivery of aid is carried out in compliance with all sanitary and epidemiological standards.
“During the coronavirus pandemic, we have increased the amount of hygiene products distributed. In addition, personal protective equipment and an information leaflet with a reminder of the rules of safe behavior during the pandemic were included in the packages,” the agency’s interlocutor said.
In addition to humanitarian aid, the Mission of the Red Cross in the Republic provides home-based assistance to lonely elderly people and provides them with the necessary care.
“The program of home visits includes 12 people - lonely, bedridden elderly people, mainly in rural areas of South Ossetia. Our employees regularly visit them in the villages and provide minimal sanitary care. If a person needs medical care, they deliver him to a medical facility. For these people, this is a necessary, invaluable help. After all, they are alone and they have no one to turn to for help,” said Tedety.
Marina Tedety has noted that the International Committee of the Red Cross continues to implement other programs, in particular, activities in the framework of facilitating urgent medical transportation, maintaining family ties between relatives separated by conflict, as well as the efforts aimed at clarifying the fate of the missing persons.
