Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of South Ossetia Znaur Gassiev has been accepted into the ranks of the Russian Historical Society (RIO), the press service of the diplomatic mission reports.

It was noted here that Gassiev took part in the general meeting of RIO in St. Petersburg at the invitation of the Chairman of the Society, Sergei Naryshkin.

Director of the Foreign Intelligence Service of the Russian Federation Sergei Naryshkin was re-elected to the post of Chairman of the RIO for another three years.

According to the South Ossetian Embassy, in his address to hundreds of delegates from all over Russia, Naryshkin has noted that today time itself poses great challenges to the historical community.

“The events of recent years have convincingly proven that the ability to learn lessons from the past gives the state and society a serious margin of strength and often becomes a strategic advantage. And vice versa, the loss of this ability leads to degradation of the state. You don't have to look far for examples. Therefore, the need for high-quality historical knowledge is only growing, and the number of areas in which it finds application is increasing,” Naryshkin is quoted by the press service.

In such conditions, it is vital that the foundation of historical and educational work be not myths, but reliable facts - not so long ago this approach was normatively enshrined in the Fundamentals of State Policy in the Field of Historical Education.

The second, no less important component of competent historical education, the head of the Foreign Intelligence Service named the traditional values listed in the decree of President of the Russian Federation Vladimir Putin, issued in 2022.

The event was attended by hundreds of delegates from all over the country - famous scientists, teachers, public figures, representatives of museums, foundations and the highest echelons of government.

Decisions were made on the priority areas of the Society’s work for 2024–2025: the 200th anniversary of the Decembrists’ rising in St. Petersburg, the 80th anniversary of the victory in the Great Patriotic War, the 60th anniversary of man’s flight into space, as well as the anniversaries of the poet Sergei Yesenin and the writer Mikhail Sholokhov. The creation of new regional branches was also discussed.

The goal of the RIO is to unite the efforts of society, the state, scientists, creative figures and history buffs to form the all-Russian historical culture based on the objective study, coverage and popularization of domestic and world history, as well as the preservation of national memory.
