The tragic events that began in Abkhazia on August 14, 1992 will forever remain the unhealed wound for the fraternal people. This is stated in the note of the South Ossetian Foreign Ministry with words of solidarity and support to the Abkhaz Foreign Ministry.

On Wednesday, Abkhazia is marking the Day of Remembrance of Defenders of the Fatherland. 32 years ago, on this day, August 14, 1992, at the height of the holiday season, the units of the Georgian National Guard under the command of Tengiz Kitovani invaded the territory of Abkhazia. A bloody war began which lasted 413 days and ended on September 30 with the victory of the Abkhaz people.

The South Ossetian Foreign Ministry has noted that at the cost of great losses and victims, the people of Apsny won a decisive victory in a selfless struggle and managed to defend their right to a peaceful life, demonstrating exceptional courage, heroism and patriotism.

“On this memorable day, people of South Ossetia are sharing the bitterness of loss with the families and friends of the fallen defenders and civilians of Abkhazia and bow their heads before the bright memory of the fallen,” the note reads.

Up to two thousand Georgian “guardsmen”, 58 armored vehicles, and a large amount of artillery (including Grad and Uragan rocket launchers) took part in the occupation of Abkhazia. The plan for the occupation of Abkhazia, codenamed “Sword,” was implemented two weeks after Georgia was admitted to the UN.
