Minister of Foreign Affairs of South Ossetia, Dmitry Medov, noted in a comment to the Res news agency that the formation of the country's foreign policy department was connected with the creation of the first government of the Republic.
Medoev has reminded that on May 28-29, 1992, amid the escalation of Georgian armed aggression against the people of South Ossetia and bloody hostilities, a session of the Supreme Council of the Republic of South Ossetia was held in Tskhinval, where the Act of Declaration of Independence of South Ossetia was adopted.
This historical step, according to him, based on the results of the referendum of 1992 and impeccable from the point of view of international law, was dictated by the need to form the own statehood as the only means of protection and guarantee the observance of the rights and freedoms of the people of South Ossetia. The document noted that it was adopted "on the basis of the mortal danger that hung over the Republic of South Ossetia in connection with the atrocities that brought its people and culture to the brink of extinction, the Ossetian genocide, and the cruelty and treachery carried out by the Republic of Georgia."
“I remember that day, May 28, 1992, - at that time I was a deputy of the Supreme Council of the 1st convocation. We, as a rule, gathered for sessions in the conditions of the blockade, under continuous shelling and made important decisions. It was at this session the first Council of Ministers of the Republic was formed and the most important institution of independent statehood of South Ossetia - the Ministry of External Relations of the Republic of South Ossetia, transformed in 2002 into the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, was established, "Medoev said.
Since 2011, the Minister noted, this significant date is celebrated as the Day of the diplomatic worker. South Ossetian diplomacy, according to him, is rightfully one of the key components of the statehood of South Ossetia.
Medoev has stressed that since its formation, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the RSO has been working hard to strengthen the foreign policy positions of the young state. The past years, he noted, have confirmed the correctness of the chosen path, and the international recognition of South Ossetia is a clear evidence of this.
“Today, they speak with respect about the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of South Ossetia, and this is a great merit of the team and leaders. Continuing the best traditions accumulated over the past years, we all feel great responsibility to the country and clearly recognize the importance of our work, which consists in upholding the interests of our state in the international arena in the difficult conditions of the modern world, "concluded the Minister of Foreign Affairs.
