The Cabinet of Ministers of South Ossetia has made changes to the procedure for the use of weapons and military equipment in the protection of the state border and natural resources of the Republic. According to the new document, when protecting the state border, it will be possible to use weapons against drones.

Valery Alikhanty, a member of the KGB Border Service of South Ossetia, made a corresponding report at the government meeting on Wednesday.

“At present, unmanned aerial vehicles are finding an increasing range of applications in both the civil and military spheres,” Alikhanty said. “The state border of South Ossetia with Georgia is no exception, as evidenced by the increased use of unmanned aerial vehicles by the neighboring state.”

According to him, the December 18, 2009 Decree of the RSO government regulates the procedure for the use of weapons and military equipment in the protection of the state border and natural resources on the territory of the Republic.

“The procedure for the use of weapons in relation to unmanned aircraft and unmanned aerial systems - helicopters, airplanes has been indicated,” Alikhanty has specified. “In such conditions, the border authorities of South Ossetia do not have the right to legally use weapons and military equipment to stop violations of the suppression of attempts to violate the state border, which does not allow them to fully fulfill the tasks of ensuring the border security.”

The Cabinet unanimously approved the proposed changes.
