Any threats to South Ossetia from Georgia are shattered by the strategic partnership with the Russian Federation, the former president of the Republic (2012-2017) Leonid Tibilov noted in a commentary to IA "Res", commenting on the possible aggravation of the situation in the region after the upcoming parliamentary elections in the neighboring republic.
"Of course, there is serious concern in the event of the victory of the opposition forces in the elections in Georgia, directly promoting revanchist sentiments regarding South Ossetia and Abkhazia," Tibilov said. - But since political processes in general, and especially in Georgia, are quite unpredictable, there is no point in predicting or getting ahead of events."
The former head of state believes that it is necessary to first wait for the results of the expression of the will of voters in the neighboring country.
"And then all of us, our leadership, in my opinion, will have to proceed from the emerging realities," he noted. "The elections in the neighboring republic are undoubtedly of interest in terms of the final result and, accordingly, the further development of the situation in the region, since the prerequisites for one or another development of the situation in different scenarios can be traced at least based on the rhetoric and extremely opposing views of the main political players in this election campaign."
Leonid Tibilov has emphasized that problems must be solved as they arise.
"In general, we must be ready for everything," he has noted. "There is no doubt that in any scenario, the right conclusions will be made and the most correct actions will be taken."
According to the former leader of the Republic, South Ossetia faces many threats and challenges.
"If we reason from the point of view of security, any threats are shattered by the strategic partnership, the alliance of the Republic of South Ossetia with the Russian Federation, which today is our main guarantor of stability and security," the ex-President said.
He added that “given the global nature of the development of the international situation, a certain zone of turbulence, the Republic will have to take a careful and verified approach to overcoming any challenges in a variety of directions, including the domestic political ones, since everything is interconnected in a certain way.”
“There are risks, of course, and there always have been, if we delve into history,” Tibilov has noted. “But South Ossetia has decided on the vector of development, we see our future in close interaction with the Russian Federation, and this is the most important thing.”
