South Ossetian President Alan Gagloev took part in the events dedicated to the 21st anniversary of the Beslan tragedy in North Ossetia. This was reported by the press service of the head of the Republic.
The memory of the victims of the tragedy was also honored by head of the Republic of North Ossetia-Alania Sergei Menyailo, Chairman of the LDPR Leonid Slutsky, the heads of the parliaments of North and South Ossetia, deputies and members of the governments of the two republics, and other officials.
"The names of the hostages, special forces soldiers, and Emergencies Ministry employees killed by terrorists 21 years ago were read to the countdown of the metronome. After a minute of silence, 334 white balloons were released into the sky to represent the number of victims of the terrorist attack," the report says.
Participants in the memorial events also laid flowers at the Tree of Sorrow monument at the City of Angels memorial cemetery and at the monument to the fallen fighters of the FSB Special Forces Alpha and Vympel.
On the morning of September 1, 2004, a group of more than 30 terrorists seized school No. 1 in Beslan, where a festive line-up was taking place at the time. The terrorists took 1,128 people hostage and held them in the school gym for three days without water or food. The tragedy claimed the lives of 334 people, including 186 children. The law enforcement officers and the Ministry of Emergency Situations were also killed. 810 people were injured.
