Delegation of South Ossetia, represented by Associate Professor of the Department of Ossetian Language and General Linguistics at the Alexander Tibilov South Ossetian State University , Yuri Dzizzoity and the staff of the South Ossetian Embassy in Russia, took part in the memorial evening dedicated to the 120th anniversary of the birth of the outstanding Soviet and Russian philologist and linguist Vasily Abaev, the press service of the Embassy reports.
The main event of the evening, which brought together representatives of the Ossetian community, scientists and linguists, was a gift that his colleagues from the Institute of Linguistics made for the 120th anniversary of Abaev's birth. They translated the first volume of the "Historical and Etymological Dictionary of the Ossetian Language" into English.
As is know, one of the main works of Abaev was first published in 1958 and today remains one of the most authoritative sources in this area. Working on the dictionary, the professor established that the etymology of Ossetian words is based on 190 languages of the world, showed the development and connection of the Ossetian language with the Iranian, Indo-European and Turkic languages. There are only a few such dictionaries in the world.
Within the framework of the event, the presentation of the Certificate of Honor of the RSO Embassy took place. For the preparation for the publication of the first volume of the English-language version of the Historical and Etymological Dictionary, created by V.I. Abaev were awarded:
Oleg Belyaev - Ph.D., teacher of the Department of Theoretical and Applied Linguistics, Faculty of Philology, the M.V. Lomonosov Moscow State University;
Andrey Sideltsev - Doctor of Philosophy, Head of the Anatolian and Celtic Languages Sector, Deputy Director of the Institute of Linguistics for Research;
Amirkhan Torchinov - Professor, Head of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, the A.I. Evdokimov Moscow State University of Medicine and Dentistry.
For participation in the celebration of the 120th anniversary of the birth of V.I. Abaev were awarded:
