Thirty-two years ago, the regional parliament proclaimed the creation of the South Ossetian Soviet Democratic Republic within the Soviet Union. This decision was one of the first steps towards independence and international recognition of the Republic of South Ossetia.

The long-term struggle for independence ended in 2008 after the failure of another military adventure by Tbilisi and Russia's recognition of the independence of South Ossetia. Following the Russian Federation, the independence of South Ossetia was recognized by several other countries - Nicaragua, Venezuela, Nauru and Syria.
