South Ossetia is celebrating Constitution Day
Today South Ossetia is celebrating one of the most important dates in the history of the Republic - Constitution Day. The Basic Law of the Republic was adopted in a national referendum by a vote on April 8, 2001. The Constitution of the Republic of South Ossetia from that moment became the basis for building a democratic and legal state.
The Basic Law provides for foundations of the constitutional system, the rights, freedoms and duties of a man and a citizen, formulates a system of power structures of South Ossetia.
Since 2001, the Basic Law has undergone many changes; amendments were made to it in 2001, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2009, and 2010. Recent changes to the Constitution were introduced in April 2011. It should be noted that prior to April 2001 in South Ossetia acted the Basic Law, adopted on November 2, 1993, which initiated the development of the legal framework of South Ossetia. The Constitution of South Ossetia, as the foundation of the country, should be the law, which must know every citizen of the Republic. In addition, the Constitution must be the guarantor of the country's unity, further comprehensive development of the independent Republic of South Ossetia.
The first page of the Constitution of the Republic runs as follows:
"We, the people of South Ossetia, on the basis of responsibility towards the present and future generations in an effort to ensure the security and prosperity of our Fatherland, on the basis of universally recognized principles of equality and self-determination of peoples, guided by the Declaration of State Sovereignty of the Republic of South Ossetia, claiming the rights and freedoms of a man and a citizen, consolidating the foundations of social and political order, proclaim and establish the Constitution of the Republic of South Ossetia. "
