December 21, 1991 was adopted the Declaration of Independence of the Republic of South Ossetia. This was an important political step in the establishment of statehood of the Republic of South Ossetia. The IA "Res" correspondent asked a deputy of the Supreme Soviet first convocation of the Republic of South Ossetia, Plenipotentiary Representative of the President of South Ossetia on post-conflict settlement Murat Dzhioev to comment on the significance of adoption of this document.

"It was really an important and a timely political manoeuvre made by the then Supreme Soviet of our Republic. The adoption of the Declaration of Independence of the Republic of South Ossetia, December 21, 1991 followed on the second day after the collapse of the Soviet Union, which had occurred on December 20, "- he said.
According to Dzhioev, the timely adoption of this document, lies in the fact that it took place not under theunifiedfederal state, and not later, when were recognized other states, separated from the former Soviet Union.
"That is, the Republic of South Ossetia did not destroy the Soviet Union and didn`t become a part of one of the post-Soviet states, "- said the envoy.
He continued that in the past South Ossetia, as autonomy, was part of the Georgian Soviet Socialist Republic within the framework of a unified Soviet Union.
"When the Georgian SSR started to aggravate the nationalist and centrifugal aspirations, the Supreme Soviet of the GSSR in March-June 1990 canceled in violation of the union legislation, all legal grounds of entering South Ossetia in the composition of this Union Republic. Against this background was proclaimed the Republic of South Ossetia in September 1990, the government and the people of which were seeking then one thing - that the Republic of South Ossetia would have been recognized as a subject of the updated union state and would have become a part of this state directly. But when December 20, 1991 in the Bialowieza Forest was finally put an end to the USSR, the Supreme Soviet of South Ossetia on the second day adopted the Declaration of Independence and started the procedures on legalization of the independent state in full compliance with international law and the right of the people of South Ossetia to self-determination," - reminded Dzhioev.
The envoy has continued that then was conducted a referendum on independence and following its results was adopted the Act of Independence of South Ossetia.
"All these events were taking place along with the Georgian armed aggression. Thanks to firm, legally and politically tram position of the people of South Ossetia and fraternal assistance of the Russian Federation, today our state is stable and recognized, "- he stressed.
