September 3, 2008 rightfully occupies a key place in the modern history of South Ossetia, Ambassador of the Republic to Russia Znaur Gassiev noted in a message to the Nicaraguan Ambassador Alba Torres in connection with the 16th anniversary of the recognition of the independence of the Republic of South Ossetia by Nicaragua.
"Such a serious step on the part of Nicaragua has opened up large-scale opportunities for creative work and strengthening of bilateral dialogue in the spirit of respect and friendship for the two countries. People of South Ossetia highly appreciate the existing high level of cooperation with Nicaragua and once again confirm their commitment to the comprehensive development of relations," the text of the message reads.
Gassiev expressed gratitude to the people and leadership of Nicaragua for their continued support, and also wished peace, goodness and prosperity to the Republic.
It should be noted that Nicaragua became the first country to recognize the independence of South Ossetia following Russia.
