In the period preceding the parliamentary elections in Georgia, the topic of the Georgian-Ossetian relations will be used, one way or another, in the domestic political pre-election struggle, the South Ossetian Foreign Ministry has noted, commenting on the statements of representatives of the Georgian Dream party.
"As expected, the statements of Bidzina Ivanishvili, the honorary chairman of the ruling Georgian Dream party, about the need to apologize to the Ossetian people for the armed aggression against the Republic of South Ossetia in August 2008, were followed by the country's Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze, who stated that no one in Georgia was going to do this," the Foreign Ministry said.
It was noted that Kobakhidze's position, considering his compatriots who were fighting against the civilian population of South Ossetia as heroes, and the Ossetians who were defending their land as murderers, is entirely consistent with the distorted understanding of the real state of affairs implanted in Georgia.
"However, the prospect of improving relations cannot depend on the political situation that has developed in Georgia at a certain moment.
Unfortunately, there are too many bloodstains and unhealed wounds in the history of the Ossetian people, left by the Georgian politics and the Georgian politicians in 1920, 1989-2004, 2008," the Ministry has stressed.
The Foreign Ministry added that a certain tendency to comprehend the acts committed, which is currently being broadcast in the context of the logic of the pre-election process, seems to suggest practical measures in the future.
"We expect that this real step, confirming the sincerity of the good intentions voiced by Mr. Ivanishvili, will soon become a legally binding documentary renunciation of Georgia's use of force or threat of force against the Republic of South Ossetia and the Republic of Abkhazia," the Ministry has noted.
The Foreign Ministry added that the political vector of South Ossetia's development is a historically conscious choice, conditioned by the need to comprehensively strengthen allied and integration ties with the Russian Federation, which is the guarantor of peace and security in the region, and on whose territory the majority of the divided Ossetian people live.
