South Ossetia will invite Syrian parliamentarians to observe parliamentary elections in 2019, told RIA Novosti in Moscow Igor Kochiev, the head of the Foreign Policy Committee of the South Ossetian Parliament,

“In any case, we will send such an invitation to our Syrian colleagues to be the observers,” Kochiev said, answering the question of whether they plan to invite representatives of the SAR in Tskhinval to observe the upcoming parliamentary elections.

According to him, today the issue of signing a cooperation agreement between the parliaments of the two countries is on the agenda. He pointed out that an invitation to visit South Ossetia had been sent to Syrian parliamentarians.

“It is planned such a visit. We hope that it will take place soon,” Kochiev noted.

He has stressed that South Ossetian parliamentarians are interested in the development of inter-parliamentary cooperation with the Syrian colleagues.

"We would like our colleagues from Syria to visit our country and get acquainted with our way of life, with our state, our picturesque places. And we will welcome them with pleasure," he said.

The previous parliamentary elections were held in the Republic in 2014. The next vote in the elections to the legislative body of South Ossetia will be held in 2019.

Syria recognized the independence of the Republic on May 29, 2018. South Ossetian President Anatoly Bibilov paid an official visit to Syria in July and met with Syrian leader Bashar al-Assad. They signed a Treaty of friendship and cooperation.
